Accidental Prime Minister – good acting by Anupam and Akshay

By Devaki Parthasarathy

Good acting by Anupam as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Akshaye Khanna as Sanjaya

Watched this political drama quite by accident! A film based on the book by the same name is like a kindergarten of other political dramas that were hard hitting and dark. This movie tries from get go to entertain rather than inform.

Barely touching on the scandals of the era, 2G, 3G terror attack of 26/11, the crucial nuclear deal is covered in fair bit of detail. The impact of this ”˜genius’ PM’s actions on the public is never really shown beyond  a newsroom debate and a few newspaper headlines. In an attempt to keep it short, the details became sketchy and vague, thinning down the plot immensely and never really letting you sink your teeth into it.
But what the film lacked in finesse it more than made up in its boldness! Depicting characters of the era in a true rather than media hyped light. Anupam Kher is in his element! His portrayal of the soft spoken and gentle genius PM leaves you feeling so sad and rooting for him! Akshaye Khanna as Sanjaya is brilliant, oscillating between enacting and a documentary type narration he did his job superbly! Even Sonia and Rajiv Gandhis did their jobs well!
Overall rating I would watch it for the actors rather than the plot or direction! Good for an easy Sunday arvo chai pakora watch.
