Prepare to sleep less, cricket lovers in Australia! The 2019 cricket World Cup starts in England on Thursday and will go on till July 14.

The reigning champion Australia has won the World Cup a record five times, in 1987-88, 1999, 2002-03, 2006-07 and 2014-15. They have also been runners-up in 1975 (the inaugural year) and in 1995-96.

The West Indies won the first two World Cups in 1975 and in 1979 and were the runners-up in 1983.

India won twice, in 1983 and 2010-11 and was runners-up in 2002-03.

Pakistan won in 1991-92 and was runners-up in 1999.

Sri Lanka won in 1995-96 and was runners-up in 2006-07 and 2010-11.

England was runners-up three times, in 1979, 1987-88 and 1991-92 but without winning once.

New Zealand was runners-up in 2014-15.

Despite being one of the strongest teams, South Africa has failed to enter the Final even once.

For the readers of TIDU, here are the records held by Indian cricketers:

·              The first total of over 400 was recorded by India (5 for 413) against Bermuda at Port-of-Spain on March 19, 2007.

  • Sachin Tendulkar was the quickest to 1000 runs, accomplishing the feat in his 20th innings – his aggregate at the end of the innings against Pakistan at Manchester on June 8, 1999 being 1043 at 61.35.  South Africa’s Abraham de Villiers had emulated Tendulkar’s feat of reaching the milestone in 20 innings – his tally at the end of the innings against Pakistan at Auckland on March 7, 2015 being the same, 1043 at 57.94.
  • Tendulkar is the first and only batsman to aggregate 2000 runs in the World Cup, 2278 at 56.95 in 45 matches.
  • Tendulkar scored most runs in one World Cup, 673 at an average of 61.18 in 11 matches in 2002-03.

·              Tendulkar was adjudged the Man of the Match most frequently, nine times in 45 matches. The next best is Australia’s fast bowler Glenn McGrath, six times in 39 matches. Lance Klusener of South Africa leads on percentage, being made Man of the Match five times in 14 matches, a percentage of 35.71.

  • Sourav Ganguly (183) and Rahul Dravid (145) were the first to add 300 runs, (318)

For the second wicket against Sri Lanka at Taunton, England on May 26, 1999.

  • India’s Chetan Sharma was the first bowler to perform a hat-trick, against New Zealand at Nagpur in India on October 31, 1987.

How many more records will Virat Kohli’s Indian cricketers set in this World Cup? India’s first match is against South Africa at Southampton on June 5.
