Ustad Rashid Khan in Concert on April 7

By Aradhana Bhatt

Alap Inc. of Sydney has proudly announced a landmark concert after the un-precedented success last year of Kaushiki Chakraborty’s performance. Padmashree Ustad Rashid Khan will be performing at Sir John Clancy Auditorium, University of NSW on Sunday, on April 7, 2019 at 5.30 pm. Ustadji will be accompanied by some of the best musicians from India: Padmashree Pt. Vijay Ghate on tabla, Pt. Ajay Joglekar on harmonium and Ustad Murad Ali on Sarangi. The concert promises to be one that many will remember in the years to come.

”˜Alaap’ is a musical term in the Hindustani classical music dictionary. It signifies introduction, an opening of a rendition. The group Alap Inc. is a non-profit organisation, run by like-minded volunteers dedicated to the cause of promoting Indian classical music by presenting high calibre artists in Sydney. They work tirelessly and selflessly for this cause.

For those of us who keep abreast with the contemporary classical music scenario in India, Ustad Rashid Khan is one of its foremost exponents. He hails from a long lineage of illustrious musicians and singers and was trained from a young age by his maternal grand-uncle Ustad Nisar Hussein Khan, giving his first performance at the tender age of 11. Ustad Rashid Khan’s style depicts his mastery of ”˜taan’ and ”˜layakari’, two salient features of the Gwalior Gharana of singing, to which his Rampur-Sahaswan style is connected. He is the recipient of the prestigious ”˜Padmashree’ as well as the ”˜Sangeet-Natak Akademi Award’. A versatile signer, Ustad Rashid Khan has an extensive repertoire to his credit. He does equal justice to the semi classical Thumri and Bhajan and has lent his voice to some memorable film numbers including ”˜Aaoge jab tum Sajana’ in the film ”˜Jab we Met’, ”˜Tore Bina Mohe Chain nahi’ in ”˜Kisna:The Warrior Poet’ and ”˜Allah hi Rahem’ in ”˜My Name is Khan’, just to name a few.
