Gandhi statue to be unveiled in Jubilee Park, Parramatta by the President of India

A bronze statue of Indian independence movement leader Mahatma Gandhi will be unveiled in Jubilee Park, Parramatta on Thursday 22 November from 3pm-4.30pm in honour of his 150^th  birth anniversary.

Designed by Indian sculptors Ram and Anil Sutar, the statue will be presented by his excellency Mr Ram Nath Kovind President of the Republic of India and City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Andrew Wilson.

“It is an honour to welcome President Kovind to our City and to celebrate the inspirational life and work of Mahatma Gandhi,” Cr Wilson said.

“Gandhi embodied peace, freedom and acceptance ”“ ideals that many around the world continue to fight for today. This statue will serve as a reminder, not just of the man himself, but of everything he represented. It also signifies the powerful and ongoing connection between the City of Parramatta and the people of India.”

The life-size statue, which is a gift from the Indian Government, is identical to the one presented to the city of Brisbane in 2014.

According to 2016 Census data for the City of Parramatta, India ranks as the highest country of birth other than Australia.

“As home to the largest population of people of Indian descent in Australia, the City of Parramatta is overjoyed to be marking this momentous anniversary with our wonderful community. We give our sincere thanks to President Kovind and the people of India for this precious gift, which will stand proudly in our City from this day forward,” Cr Wilson said.
