Diwali an Opportunity to celebrate your heritage: Prime Minister Scott Morrison to the local Indian community

Message on the occasion of Diwali in Australia by PM Scott Morrison

“Marked by millions of people worldwide, Diwali is a time to come together with family and friends in joyful affirmation of the triumph of light over darkness.

Traditionally coinciding with the season of harvest, it is often celebrated with candles and lamps and the sharing of gifts and sweets.

This year, there will be many Diwali celebrations across Australia, each adding to the vast array of festivities that make up our diverse multicultural calendar.

For those of Hindu faith, this is an opportunity to celebrate your heritage, and a chance to share some of its joy and passion with the wider community.

In Australia, we are fortunate to live in a land of acceptance and encouragement, where respect for different cultural traditions is part of our national story.

Over a century ago, the ‘Father of Federation’ Sir Henry Parkes expressed the hope that Australia would gather “all the fruits of the culture of the world”, and that we would all serve our country “with a patriot’s love”. You are fulfilling that hope.

Everyone is part of our nation’s rich tapestry, making us all not simply heirs to the culture of our own forebears, but to those of our neighbours too.

As communities across Australia gather to celebrate the festival of lights, I wish you a joyous Diwali.”

The Hon Scott Morrison MP

Prime Minister of Australia
