Message from Ray Williams, Minister for Multicultural Affairs, on Kerala Floods

I offer my sincere condolences to families and friends who lost their loved ones in the tragic floods in Kerala, which has left more than 800,000 people displaced.

As rescue teams battle to save lives and relief efforts concentrate on supplying safe water and medicine, our thoughts and prayers are with the Australian Malayalee community, their families and relatives in Kerala.

I have spoken to leaders and members of the Malayalee community in Sydney who have reported on the tragic circumstances in their homeland. The Sydney Malayalee Association has cancelled scheduled Onam celebrations and is donating all ticket sales to the Kerala Chief Minister’s Flood Appeal. I know other community organisations are also supporting these efforts.

Australians are no strangers to natural disasters and the immense scale of this tragedy has touched all our hearts.

I applaud efforts by Malayalee Australians to help families in their homeland, and on behalf of the NSW Government, I offer my deepest sympathy.
