World-class cultural icon in the heart of Sydney, our Parramatta

City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Andrew Wilson has welcomed the State Government’s commitment to establish a new flagship Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences (MAAS) in the heart of Sydney’s Central City.

“This is a wonderful outcome for Parramatta and Western Sydney. It is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to deliver an iconic, world-class museum in Sydney’s Central City,” Cr Wilson said.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Arts Minister Don Harwin announced today that the State’s largest museum will be built on the Parramatta riverbank with a science and technology focus and the biggest dome planetarium in Australia.

“This will be a modern museum for all of Sydney. People will come from all over Australia and the world to visit, delivering a major boost to our economy,” Cr Wilson said.

“I congratulate the State Government on their commitment and vision for an iconic museum in Western Sydney, which will be a catalyst for future growth in the region.

“Our community have told us that their vision for Parramatta is to have a vibrant and active city, with world-class cultural infrastructure. The new museum will help in delivering that.

“It will be the anchor for a new arts and cultural precinct in our City, which will include the redevelopment of the much-loved Riverside Theatres.

“This is the biggest investment in cultural infrastructure that we have seen for Western Sydney and it will help to address the significant inequity in arts and cultural funding for this region that has been ignored for too long. Continued support from the State Government is critical to ensuring access to cultural opportunities that meet the needs of Western Sydney into the future.”
