India defeats Indonesia on Day 3 of the Sudirman Cup

India’s superstar P V Sindhu won the Women’s singles match as India defeated Indonesia 4-1 in the Total BWF Sudirman Cup 2017. Indonesia now faces Denmark in its Group 1D match on Wednesday 24 May 2017 at 6pm.

After an embarrassing 1-4 defeat against European powerhouse Denmark in the opening match on Tuesday India desperately need a victory against Indonesia.

And what a great victory it was. India came out fighting against the Indonesians setting themselves up for a stunning win and keeping themselves in with a chance to go through to the quarter finals in the Sudirman Cup mixed team badminton Championship.

India’s triump was due to outstanding performances by Kidambi Srikanth, PV Sindhu, Ashwini Ponnappa. Ashwini won both the mixed doubles and women’s doubles match.

Palanichammy O Thevar, President of the Federation of Indian Communities Queensland said “It’s great to be here at the Sudirman Cup Tournament to witness India’s victory! Congratulations to Team India and on behalf of all the Indians in Queensland and around Australia, we will throw all our support for the team India advances through to the Quarter Finals.”

Mr John Kennedy President of the United Indian Associations, Mr Jaydatt Nayak President of the Gujarati Samaj of NSW and Mr. Babu Varghese president of the Sydney Malayalee Association travelled from Sydney to throw support behind team india. Mr Satinder Singh Chawla also travelled from Melbourne to witness India take on Denmark on Tuesday.

Mr John Kennedy, President of the United Indian Associations said “It’s great to be in the Gold Coast for the Sudirman Cup Tournament. We are proud on behalf of all the Indian Communities in Sydney and Australia to be here to support our national badminton heroes and encourage everyone to cheer on Team India. We thank Red Elephant, a fan engagement agency, for inviting us to be a part of the Sudirman Cup Community Ambassador program.”

With both Denmark and Indian winning a match each, India’s destiny to go through to the quarter finals lies in the hand of Indonesia as it braces for its next match against Denmark.

Both Denmark and India now have won one match each and a victory by Denmark would catapult India in to the Quarter Finals after today’s clash between Indonesia and Denmark.

If Indonesia wins, it will come down to the number of matches, games and points as only two teams can qualify for the knockout stage from Group 1 D.

India, ranked ninth, have managed to reach the knockout stage of the tournament only once during the 2011.
