Nominations open Monday for the NSW Council elections

Nominations open next Monday, 1 August for candidates wishing to contest the 81 NSW Local Councils holding elections on Saturday, 10 September 2016.

Candidates must nominate with the Returning Officer for the council area they wish to contest by 12 noon Wednesday, 10 August 2016. Locations and contact details of the 39 Returning Officers’ offices are available at www.votensw.info or by calling 1300 135 736.

22 Returning Officers service a region of more than one council. If the Returning Officer’s office is not located in a particular council area nominations can also be delivered to the office of the relevant council.

“The nomination process is one of the most important phases of the electoral cycle. This is when the community learns who will stand to represent them on their local council,” Acting NSW Electoral Commissioner Linda Franklin said.

“In the afternoon of Wednesday, 10 August, each of the 39 Returning Officers across the State will conduct draws to determine the order in which candidates’ names appear on the ballot paper.

“Candidates need to be nominated by two other electors or a registered political party.   All candidates must ensure that their nominators are enrolled for the council area or ward in which they are standing and nominators should check their own enrolment status. We suggest that candidates are proposed by more than two nominators in case some nominators are not correctly enrolled.”

Details of nominated candidates will be posted on the NSW Electoral Commission website www.votensw.info as they are processed.

Information about nominations is available in the Handbook for Parties, Groups, Candidates and Scrutineers-Local Government Elections from www.votensw.info.
