Westpac opens first Indian welcome centre in Blacktown

Westpac recently opened its first Indian Welcome Centre at Blacktown branch. Located in Western Sydney, the Centre is right in the heart of a large and vibrant Indian community, and is able to assist newly arrived Indian migrants by providing key settlement information.

The Centre is open from Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 4pm and staff will be able to assist new migrants with more than just their financial needs. Visitors are able to get advice about finding rental accommodation and information on social services such as Medicare, Centrelink, and transport. The Centre, which has a children’s play area, will also provide migrants with access to information on how to get involved with their local community through community associations, temples and local events.

Staff at the Centre are as diverse as the customers they serve and they speak a range of languages including Hindi, Punjabi, Bangla and Filipino. The branch is led by Suraj Kapila, who is also part of the NSW Government Deepavali Advisory Group.

“For nearly 200 years, Westpac has continued to reach out to the country’s newest citizens migrating to Australia to help them establish a home. Our staff at the Centre are committed to building lasting and meaningful relationships, and look forward to helping customers so they can start a new and prosperous life here in Australia.

The bank has over 680 branches available across Australia, with 70 branches dedicated to servicing the Indian community. In addition, Westpac also has multilingual ATMs and over 1,700 Hindi speaking staff across their network.

In the past year, Westpac has sponsored a number of key events on the Indian calendar including the Minister’s Cricket Match, the Australia Indian Friendship Fair, celebrating India’s Independence Day in Rooty Hill & most recently Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s public address at the Allphones Arena.

Westpac acknowledges the importance of Indian communities by capturing the essence of the community’s most significant festival. Westpac hosted a Deepavali celebration at the Holiday Inn in Parramatta in October. The event was attended by 300 people who enjoyed Indian food and culture and the opportunity to network with other guests.
