Introduction of Biometric Data Collection and Appointment for physical submission of application for visa and other services from Jan. 1, 2015

1. The Government of India is rolling out Biometric Data Collection for Indian Visa globally and has already implemented this in several countries. This is part of the larger IVFRT (Indian Visa and Foreigners Registration and Tracking) Programme.

  1. With effect from 1st January, 2015, applications will no longer be accepted from walk-in applicants. Physical submission of all applications at VFS Centres including Visa, Passport, OCI and Miscellaneous Consular services will require an appointment to be made online at www.vfsglobal.com/region/australia at the time of filing online application. However, applicants for services other than visa (such as Passport, OCI and Miscellaneous Consular Services) will have the option to submit their applications by post/ courier.
  2. With effect from 15th January, 2015, Biometric Data collection, including fingerprint data and facial imagery will be a mandatory requirement for all visa applicants. As a result, all visa applicants will need to first apply online and, thereafter, be physically present (mandatorily) at a visa application centre, by appointment, for submission of visa application and biometric data enrolment.
  3. Diplomatic and Official passport holders, travelling on official purposes, are exempt from applying at a visa application centre and may lodge their applications directly at the High Commission of India in Canberra or Consulates General of India in Sydney, Melbourne or Perth, as per the Consular jurisdiction.
